Resistant Materials GCSE (Full Course) AQA

Design and Technology Resistant Materials at Key Stage 4 commences with a small series of design and make projects aimed at improving and broadening skills in working accurately with a variety of different materials such as wood, metals, and plastics and also in the applied skills necessary for good designing.

The GCSE examination following the AQA Full Course Syllabus is based on 60% coursework and 40% final examination.

Year 11 Major Projects:

The GCSE work starts in earnest in the summer term of Year 10 when the pupils choose a suitable project which they can then use to demonstrate all their designing and making skills. This involves compiling a design folio to record the research, and analysis required to formulate the specification for the product they will go on to make. The design work can continue through the summer holidays enabling the practical work to start during the autumn term to meet a deadline for completion by spring half term. Due to the wide variance in materials required pupils, the pupils will be required to source their own materials for their final project. This is a useful exercise in costing and the evaluation of suitable and affordable materials and this can also provide a useful strand of information to include in the design folio.

The time taken until the final exam will be used to hone exam skills, practice skills and widen knowledge by use of further practical tasks, video and visits to local industries to find out how manufacture and processes work in the real world.

The course provides an excellent foundation in basic skills such as problem solving and a thorough understanding of practical aspects encountered in manufacturing products.
