Bike Lock

Product Design is taught across the three years in two separate units to enable pupils to gain access to all the material areas and allow a diverse range of techniques to be acquired. These projects then form a basis of the pupils selection to follow a relevant GCSE course at the end of year 9.

This project enables pupils in year 7 to work with metal. This highly successful project incorporates many metal working techniques to ensure that pupils acquire a basic skill level as early as possible.

A range of hand tools, metal working machines are used to manufacture the product to a high standard.

Pupils are introduced to the CAD/ CAM process to produce two logos of their choice that can be applied to the product.

Book Ends

Pupils will increase their knowledge and understanding using wood as a material to manufacture a product that also incorporates the basics of using structures.

Each pupil can create their own design to act as the support. The plywood product is given a make over using paints.

Acrylic Clock

Building on the skills acquired during the Bike lock project pupils undertake a design and make task where they can choose their own theme to manufacture an Acrylic Clock.

The emphasis of this project is on the quality of manufacture of the final product. Attention to detail of the final product and the relationship of style of font for the face is paramount.

Mechanical Toy

One of the product design units of work in year 8 is centred around mechanisms and modelling.

Pupils are provided with a basic set of component parts to construct the frame for a toy based on a cam mechanism. Individuals then create the animated parts for the top of the toy and illustrate using a variety of media and materials.

Pewter Casting

The casting project in year 9 is a fabulous way of introducing this technique to pupils. A range of materials and techniques are used to design and make either a key fob or broach.

Pupils learn how to make moulds and the relevant important details regarding the acrylic insert and the final casting of pewter.

The cast is then cleaned and prepared following various processes to manufacture a product of high quality.
