 French Language Teaching
Introduction:
- French language teaching is offered throughout the school and is still the
main language taught to pupils.
Why learn French?
- The proximity of France. It is our nearest neighbour and
thousands of British people choose France as their holiday destination and go
through France to reach further a field. Calais is only an hour by boat from
Dover and the channel tunnel provides a 35-minuet link between the two
countries.
- There are also historic links between the countries. We
have shared history with France from Eleanor of Aquitaine to William the
Conqueror to the two world wars.
- The links between the languages. Many of our words are
the same but just sound different: invitation; programme; crime; page;
television etc. Many French words are used in English – biscuit, gateau, café,
ballet, and the French use many English words – le weekend, le cheeseburger,
le tee shirt, le jean.
- French is the official language of not just France but also parts
of Belgium, part of Switzerland, Luxembourg, Quebec in Canada, Guadeloupe,
Martinique, la Réunion, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and French Guyana.
- Food and drink. Good eating is a way of life in France.
Although British shops now stock a greater range of French products the best
to buy the food and drink has got to be France itself.
