 Spanish Language Teaching
Introduction
- Why learn Spanish?
- Spanish is the main language of 23 countries, over 350 million people speak
it world wide. Spanish is the second main language in the United States, and is
a key player in the EU.
- Spanish speaking countries are very popular holiday destinations, therefore
learning the language is helpful. Spain and Spanish culture is very popular
worldwide, e.g. J Lo, Enrique Inglesias, salsa dancing, guacamole, and David
Beckham...
Key Stage 3
Year 7 - the main topics studied in year 7 are:

- colours
- the present tense

- talking about themselves and their family
- talking about school
|
In year 7, pupils do a mixture of Spanish and Japanese. They then choose
which one to continue with until GCSE.
Year 8 - the main topics studied in year 8 are:
- free time
- food and restaurants
- daily routine

- clothes
- body and illnesses
- where they live
|
- planning a party
- the present tense
- the past tense and the future tense
|
Year 9 - the main topics studied in year 8 are:
- Inviting someone to stay
- trains and travel
- talking about their town
|
- preparing for holidays
- going on an exchange
|
- present tense
- past tense
- the future tense
- the conditional tense
|
In year 9, pupils studying Spanish from March until the end of the year do a roundabout of projects delivered by a different teacher each time.
The projects are:
- Mexico (and the Preterite tense)
- The environment (and the Future tense)
- Spanish culture - Bullfighting Football and Dance (and how to express your
opinion)
Pupils aim to have achieved a level 5/6 by the end of year 9.
Books used in key Stage 3 are, Arriba 1, Arriba 2 .
Key Stage 4 (GCSE)
We follow the AQA syllabus.
Book used:
- In year 10: Arriba 3 or Listos
- Inyear 11: Arriba 4 or Listos
Topics include: personal relationships, leisure, home life, education and
work, environment and tourism.
These topics are the same for both Foundation and Higher candidates. In years
10 and 11, 4/5 pieces of coursework will be completed, therefore no written
exam. In May the candidates do a speaking exam and in June a listening and
reading paper. Each of these are worth 25% of the overall mark.

- Year 9 - internal exam
- Year 10 - internal exam
- Year 11 - mock in December, speaking exam in may, June listening and
reading exam - all GCSE external exams.
- Year 12 - May AS speaking exam, June reading and writing, June listening
reading and writing paper.
- Year 13 - A2 exam - March, coursework due in. May speaking exam, June
listening reading and writing paper 2.
Coursework for year 10/11 (25% of overall GCSE), year 13 (15% of
overall A level)
