Oxygen was discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele (a Swedish chemist) in 1772. Oxygen is an invisible gas. We need Oxygen to breath. It is also a gas that allows burning to occur. It takes up 20 percent of the world around us. Oxygen can be a pure gas or can also be in combination with other elements to form oxides. Oxides fill half of the earth's crust.
