The Careers Curriculum does not describe a subject or study in its own right but relates to a range of work related elements of the KLB school curriculum. The Careers Learning elements include:
The curriculum aims to provide opportunities for all pupils to prepare for working life by clearly identifying:
During October of Year 9, pupils have three lessons of careers education based on Connexions advice on choosing appropriate subjects in Year 10. Factors that may affect this decision, including personal likes and dislikes and hopes for the future are explored.
Year 10 pupils have four IT-based careers lessons and are encouraged to search the website u-explore.com which concentrates on skills required for work and includes extensive interactive sections on job information.
One of the Year 10 careers sessions helps pupils plan for and obtain work experience which takes place in July of Year 10.
The school has a database of past locations; please contact Helen Isaacs for further information, either by phone or on hisaacs@klbschool.org.uk. Pupils should aim to find a work experience placement by January of Year 10. Work Experience week is Monday 9th - Friday 13th July 2012.
If you are a parent who is able to offer a work experience placement to a Year 10 pupil, please contact Philip Ashford, Head of Careers, at pashford@klbschool.org.uk.
In November of Year 11, students who are not likely to attend KLB Sixth Form are given the opportunity to attend a mock interview conducted by Cotswold Rotary Club. This provides valuable interview experience and feedback to those students who will be applying for a college course, apprenticeship or job.
If a pupil in Year 11 would like careers advice from a trained advisor, they should inform the Head of Careers - Mr Ashford (pashford@klbschool.org.uk)
The Connexions advisor, Anne Windsor, can offer help to young people looking for an apprenticeship. If you would like your son/daughter to receive advice about apprenticeships, please contact Philip Ashford, Head of Careers, at pashford@klbschool.org.uk.
A local company, Renishaw, offer craft and more advanced apprenticeships.
In September and early October, Year 12 students are given information on employability and how to build up experience to write in CVs. Furthermore, during tutor time, they have access to www.careersbox.co.uk which gives detailed film information about careers after further education and careers in major companies.
