Mathematics

Head of Department – Mr J Brown

Aims and Objectives:

Mathematics is the language of logic and the process of problem solving through structured method and strategy. It is the aim of the Mathematics department to develop all pupils’ abilities to confidently tackle the problems they encounter in an efficient, logical manner utilising a wide range of Mathematical skills and concepts.

Curriculum:

At Key Stage 3 pupils follow the national curriculum framework focusing on the 5 core areas of Mathematics; Using and applying Mathematics, Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, and Handling Data. In Year 7 pupils receive 5 lessons per fortnight, in Years 8 and 9 they receive 6 lessons per fortnight.

At Key Stage 4 pupils follow the Edexcel Linear GCSE Mathematics course. There are 2 tiers of entry for students in Year 11; Higher tier, where grades A* - D are available, and Foundation tier where grades C–G are available. All pupils in Years 10 and 11 receive 6 periods per fortnight.

At Advanced Level pupils follow the OCR Modular A-Level Mathematics course. The course is made up of 6 modules; 4 core (C1-C4) and 2 applied (S1, M1 or D1).

Pupils are awarded a grade at AS level (3 modules; C1-C2 and S1 or M1) at the end of Year 12, before proceeding on to A2 level in Year 13.

For our more able pupils, we also offer the OCR Modular A-Level in Further Mathematics. This course has a similar structure to the standard A-Level with 6 modules being studied over the 2 years. Typical modules taken are FP1, FP2, S2, M2, M3 and either M1, D1 or S1.

Resources:

The department has 8 teaching rooms, 6 of which have full interactive facilities. Most pupils at Key Stage 3 and 4 utilise the Essential Mathematics range of textbooks and all pupils have access to a range of online and interactive learning facilities including MyMaths.co.uk and MathsMania.

Extra-Curricular:

Each year a large number of pupils take part in the individual and team National Mathematics Challenges. We also promote a range of residential Mathematics courses that focus on excellence and enhanced learning.
