Religious Education

Curriculum:

Key Stage Three:

During this stage we look at a range of issue including who we are as individuals, the main landmark events we will experience during our lives and how the observance and celebration of religious practices affect individuals and whole communities. We look closely at Christian beliefs and morals in many of our units of study. We also consider the religious of Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism and examine how Islam is portrayed in the contemporary world. Homework is set once a fortnight.

Key Stage Four:

Full Course: Our present GCSE is a combination of Religious Studies (Edexcel) and Citizenship (Edexcel). This means that students gain two separate GCSEs at the end of Year 11.

Short Course: This is studied by all Year 10 and 11 students for one period a week with one homework set once a fortnight. We study the Edexcel syllabus which covers issues from a non religious and a Christian perspective including, ‘Marriage and the Family’, ‘Community Cohesion in the UK’, ‘Matters of Life and Death’ and ‘Believing in God’. Students are encouraged to consider a range of opinions and beliefs as well as developing their own views on a range of contemporary issues. Each unit also includes a study of how the main issues are portrayed in the media.

Key Stage Five:

Philosophy (AQA syllabus): Philosophy is examined at AS with two modules and at A2 with a further two modules. Students study a range of key philosophical ideas and also the teachings of some influential philosophers. The course also helps to develop important skills such as the ability to consider and examine all sides of an argument, ask questions and debate issues. Key questions include; ‘What is a person? What makes us who we are?’, ‘Why should I be moral?’, ‘What is right, what is wrong?’
