
Mrs Gillian Hayward (Chair)
Gillian joined the governing body in 2006 and has been Chair since 2008. She is also Chair of Gloucestershire Schools' Forum which advises on the allocation of funds. Previously she was Chair of Amberley Ridge Special School and Hillesley Primary School where she lives . Two of her three children are currently pupils at KLBS. Prior to becoming a fulltime volunteer, Gillian was a Management Consultant working with large businesses on corporate improvement programmes.
Mr Mike Challis
Mike was educated at Bristol College of Advanced Technology, London University and, more recently, post graduate teaching certificate, Bolton University. He spent 30 years as a Research Engineer in the Electricity Supply Industry and a lay trade union official representing around 500 professional and technical colleagues at regional and national level. He has also spent 5 years building and running a software business providing bespoke software to industry and local authorities and 5 years as a College Lecturer specialising in teaching adults with learning difficulties.
Mike is married with 5 children, the youngest currently at KLBS.
Foundation Governors:
Mrs Lesley Chase
Lesley joined the Governing Body in September 2010 as a Foundation Governor. She has lived in Wotton 26 years and has two grown up children. She worked as a solicitor in Bristol and locally for some years but is now retired.
Mrs Margaret Clarke
In 1985, as Chair of KLB PTA, Margaret was encouraged to stand and was elected for the one of the new positions of parent governor, when the school was first allowed to have parent governors. Then in 1989 she became an LEA governor and in 1994 a Foundation Governor and a Trustee of the Foundation. Margaret was Chair of the governing body for 10 years and is currently Chair of the Healthy School committee and Chair of the KLBS Foundation.
Dr John Cordwell
John joined the governing body in 1981 and has served both as chair and vice-chair. He is a Trustee of the Foundation. He has been county councillor for the Wotton-under-Edge electoral division since 1981 and a Wotton town councillor since 1979. Following a career in the nuclear power industry he became a school inspector for Ofsted, later copy-editing and carrying out quality assurance checks on school inspection reports. Since then he has undertaken other editing work, including school science textbooks.
Miss Angela Dixon
The first contact Angela had with the then Katharine Lady Berkeley's Grammar School was in 1961 as one of a group of trainee Biology teachers who borrowed a year 7 class for local field work. After ten years teaching in secondary schools she returned to the University of Bristol as Lecturer in Education, training science teachers, and renewed her acquaintance with KLBS on its present site as a practice school for student teachers. She was appointed to the governing body as a University of Bristol nominee in 1979 and has remained associated with the school ever since, becoming a trustee of the KLBS Foundation in 1999.
Mr Vernon Jotcham
Since 1988 Vernon has been a Foundation Governor and a Trustee and he has served as Vice Chair for 15 years. Vernon and 5 members of his family have been pupils at KLB and he now has 4 grandchildren at the school.
Living in Wotton under Edge he formed a group of Companies involved in construction and development work and carried out new build and refurbishment work for Local Authorities, Hospitals, Schools, Housing Associations and private housing.
He was appointed to the DHSS and Lord Chancellor’s independent tribunals and served on them for a number of years until retirement.
Vernon is a Trustee at Yercombe Residential Care Home, Trustee/Vice Chairman of The Wotton Community Sports Foundation, President of the Wotton Bowls and Gardening Clubs and a member of Dursley Rotary and Wotton Probus Clubs.
Mrs Jane Kendall
Jane was asked to be a Governor in 1991 when she had two sons at the school and her interest in the success and well being of KLBS has never waned. For the last of her five years serving on the PTA she was Chair and is a Trustee of the Foundation. Her particular interest is in staffing. Since leaving the employment of a local, large Nursing Home group some years ago, she has been involved in a number of small home based businesses.
Parent governors:
Mrs Kylie Pace
Kylie moved to Wotton-under-Edge 8 years ago from Torquay, and both her children now attend KLBS. She has worked in pharma sales for 20 years with various roles, but particularly in nurse training and liaison. She joined the governing body in 2008 and has recently accepted the role of safeguarding governor. Kylie has also been a committee member for the WPSC for 5 years, and her husband has been PTA chair and now governor at the British school.
Mr Chris Sanders
Chris joined the governing body March 2009 and takes a special interest in the Curriculum as well as the Art & Design Department. Chris’s three children are reaping the benefits from being at KLB. The elder two have moved on through University to jobs; the youngest is at KLB now. Chris works developing collaboration and innovation for Rolls-Royce across our growing global village. Over the past 30 years worked predominantly on international aerospace programmes in varying management roles from engineering through to contracts, marketing and IT.
Mr Matthew Valentine (parent)
Matt became a Governor in 2011 and has two sons currently at KLBS. Education features strongly in Matt’s family background and he himself graduated from Lancaster University after majoring in History. Following graduation he worked for several years in retail management before building and running an online retail business which he started in 2001. Matt is Secretary of the Gloucestershire Wildfowlers Association, having been an active member for many years and a committee member since 2006.
Mr Steve Harding (parent)
Steve joined the Governing Body in January 2012 as a Parent Governor. He received his engineering education at Cranfield University and his management training at the University of Bath. Steve has recently retired having served in a variety of posts in two Departments of State. He is a qualified rugby coach and works with young players aged 4 to 18 at Chipping Sodbury RFC. Steve is married with two sons at KLBS.
