While we have enjoyed a range of benefits and very few difficulties since conversion, we have a serious concern about the level of funding for Academies in Gloucestershire compared to other Local Authority areas. In particular, the grant which we receive to pay for those services which we previously received from the Local Authority is paid at a rate which is the lowest in the country. This grant is known as the LACSEG and is paid, in Gloucestershire at the rate of £156 per pupil. In Dorset, a similar authority to Gloucestershire, the rate is £262 per pupil which means that this school would receive an additional £159,000 if it was in Dorset. This amount of money would make a real difference to the learning resources, staffing, range of courses and other support that can be made available to the pupils.
It is important to appreciate that, in Gloucestershire, 29 out of the 39 secondary schools, responsible for over 75% of pupils in the county now have Academy status.
