Bullying - Support for pupils and parents
At Katharine Lady Berkeley's School, we place the highest priority on achieving an emotionally safe environment for our pupils and students. This is an essential pre-requisite for effective learning so that
all pupils can benefit from the high quality education to which they
are entitled. We are most concerned to deal with bullying when it occurs as this can cause immense damage to the victim with consequences
which can, in some cases, last a lifetime.
Bullying can be defined as deliberately hurtful behaviour, repeated over a period of time, where it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves. The three main types of bullying are:
- Physical (e.g. hitting, kicking,
theft);
- Verbal (e.g. name calling, racist
remarks);
- Indirect (e.g. spreading rumours, excluding someone from social
groups).
The emotional distress caused by bullying in whatever form can prejudice school achievement, lead to lateness, unauthorised
absence and a whole range of other difficulties for the victim and his or her family.

bullying can be read by downloading the following PDF document:

What happens to Bullies at KLB School?
There are 5 different STAGES that deal with pupils who behave in an
aggressive, intimidating and hurtful way towards others.
- STAGE 1
- Sometimes pupils are not aware of the consequences of their
actions, so at this stage they will be given the chance to talk and
understand how their behaviour and affects other people. Often this
stops them behaving like this. The Head of Year, Assistant Head of
Year or tutor will be involved and the parents of anyone concerned
will also be informed.
- We will monitor what happens to check that the problem has gone
away. If not, the pupil will be put on STAGE 2.
- STAGE 2
- If they still insist on hurting and intimidating the same person
or someone else in a physical or emotional way, they will have also
chosen:
- several detentions
- a meeting with them and their parents to talk to the Head of
Year or a senior member of staff.
- If the bully still does not get the message that bullying has no
place at KLB or any other spot on this planet, they will be moved to
STAGE 3.
- STAGE 3
- By this stage, the pupil’s behaviour is still hurting and
intimidating others, despite being given several opportunities to
change, which is why:
- they will be excluded from school for a certain number of days
- they will meet again with their parents and the Head of Year
to discuss their future behaviour and attitude
- Again, the progress will be monitored and if nothing has
improved STAGE 4 will come into action.
- STAGE 4
- In this last but one stage and the bully should expect:
- to be excluded from the school for longer periods of time (because
KLB does not tolerate bullies)
- to be put on a Pastoral Support Plan (to help them help
themselves to change)
- to be reviewed by the Governors’ Discipline Committee (because
they are affecting other people’s welfare)
- Now, if all this failed they will reach STAGE 5!
- STAGE 5
- They still don’t get it! Hurting behaviour is keeping other
people from being happy!
- So bullies need to go! Even if it means permanent exclusion!
- If, of course, somebody decides to hurt somebody physically,
they may face any of the above sanctions immediately.
We hope everything is clear. Your B-team
The following web sites give useful advice to pupils and their parents if they are worried about bullying. As stated on many of these sites, we always encourage pupils who consider that they are being bullied at school to speak to a teacher about the problem. It is only when we are aware of the issue that we can deal with it.
