Autumn Term 2003 - Year 9 pupils have been exploring the use of Serif Photo plus to produce digital images.

The design brief was to produce an image, based on a photograph of a flower or leaf, that uses symmetry.

The task involved the following stages:

  • Choosing a suitable photographic image and loading it into Serif Photoplus;
  • Selecting and copying an area of the image that would form a suitable repeating pattern;
  • Pasting the selection back in as a new layer;
  • Resizing the new layer and removing any background if required;
  • Duplicating the layer 3 times, flipping and moving the new layers to form a symmetrical pattern;
  • Deleting the original background and creating a new one filled with one of the graduated fill options available;
  • Flattening the layers to end up with 1 layer and the background;
  • Experimenting with various digital filters and deformations;
  • Exporting the final image as a JPEG file.
