Work Experience

At Barton End Stables

Times

I started work at 8.30a.m and finished at 4.30p.m. I was able to choose what times I worked from and till, so if you went here you could chose your own hours.

What to wear

I wore a plain t-shirt, jodhpurs and riding boots, but when the weather got too hot I wore shorts and small boots.

Lunch

I took a packed lunch and has a chaise to eat with the staff or eat on my own at 12.30 till 1.00. There is a vendor machine and drinks machine.

What jobs I did

When I was at Barton End stables there were horses and pony's which needed bringing in and taking out early in the morning and in the evening. Feeding, mucking out, checking all the horses and pony's had water was an every day task. In the middle of the day it was very quiet and not much to do apart jobs like cleaning all the feed buckets, cleaning tack and brushing up the yard. But at 3.00p.m. it got much busier. This was the best part of the day for me. I tacked up and down horses and pony's, I also helped in lessons lead reining for young children who were beginning to ride and help and comfort disabled people.

What is gained from the experience

When I was a Barton End I gain a several qualities. I had to work independently and as a team. I had to meet new people and fit in with them. I learnt a lot about the stables and how it is run. I also became more confident around horses and what needs doing and when.

Working at Barton End was quite tiring because i was on my feet all day, alot of walking was in order and running round the school when lead reining.
