Year 10 Work Experience 2005

Name of the Work Experience placement:

Filton Vets-4-Pets

Type of work experience:

  • Veterinary practice

How did you get there each day:

  •  Car

In general, what sort of things did you have to do:

  • Watch, learn things, help etc.

What did you think of the work experience:

  • It was interesting and you can learn a lot of new things. Throughout the week I enjoyed myself a lot.

Daily diary:

  • Monday: On Monday I was shown around and told all the safety rules. In the morning I watched and helped in consultation and then after that was done I went and watched the operations. There were 6 in total. After that I had a bit of lunch and then helped pack envelopes in reception, I then went home.
  • Tuesday: |On Tuesday I did practically the same as on Monday however I stayed later on in the evening as there were afternoon consultations as well. I stayed until 7:20pm in the end and it was very tiring. There were 5 operations that I watched in total and I then had to make puppy packs for people that wanted information about it. I had to also hold a cat that had to be put down so it didn’t struggle and ran away, this was quite upsetting but it was for the best.
  • Wednesday: On Wednesday I watched consultation again and talked to some of the clients. I had to weigh some animals like dogs and cats. It was pretty repetitive in what I had to do but it was still not that boring as there were a variety of things wrong with the animals.
  • Thursday: Thursday is the non-operation day, on this day there were a few consultations in the morning and then I had to help Emma with letters and leaflets throughout the rest of the day, I had to do a bit of cleaning as well. This was probably the most boring day of work experience but I still enjoyed myself.
  • Friday: Friday was pretty much the same as Monday and Tuesday, it was interesting and again I talked to a lot of clients and found out many new things. One of the operations was quite interesting because it was a difficult one and they had to remove the end of a bone in a bogs leg. Then there were x-rays and I got to see how everything fitted together, or not in some cases.

Any special skills that were needed:

  • Not to be queasy!

Any other requirements such as special clothing or safety equipment:

  • Casual but smart clothing. Flat shoes.
