Placement - Tetbury Hospital

Nature of the business:

bulletA small local hospital containing; outpatients, day clinic, physiotherapy unit, dentist and minor injuries unit.

Career paths available within this business:

bulletNursing, physiotherapy, doctor (only visit occasionally for day clinics eg; podiatry) , receptionist, occupational therapist, caretaker, cleaner and gardeners.

General information on what I did during the placement:

bulletI worked mainly with the physiotherapy unit, watching how they dealt with patients and the treatment they gave. The jobs I did varied from answering the phone, making appointments for patients, using machinery (for example that caused superficial pain to relieve the patient of deeper pain, my job was to increase the level of pain when the patient got used to it.) Putting equipment away, talking to patients, watching day clinics( watching and listening was the major part), making tea and photocopying.

Daily Diary:

bulletMonday: physiotherapy and minor injuries
bulletTuesday:  audit meeting, reception
bulletWednesday: occupational therapy( house calls) and day clinic
bulletThursday: Podiatry day clinic and podiatry outpatients
bulletFriday: physiotherapy (house calls) Afternoon off

Location and Travel arrangements:

bulletA local physiotherapist drove me mostly the rest of the time my family picked me up.

Particular skills or abilities needed:

bulletInquisitive, chatty to patients, use your initiative to do jobs without being asked and patience for in-between patients . Not embarrassed easily- you can hear some quite personal things about patients.

Health and Safety requirements:

bulletDon't lift anything heavy, confidentiality with patients and sign in and out each time you enter or exit building,

Advice for anyone considering this as a work-experience placement:

bulletAsk for jobs to do if you run out, be friendly to patients as you can get some really interesting chats from them (everyone is really talkative when they're in a hospital.) Bring work to do for when you work in reception especially if it's not a busy day for reception.

Advice for anyone considering this as a career:

bulletYou need to be interested in the lives of patients as you can't just do your job and that's all. There's a lot of paperwork- treating people is not only thing.
