Badminton Success at National Schools Badminton Tournament County Finals
Thursday 31st January saw KLB Badminton Club host the County finals of the National Schools Badminton Tournament in the recently refurbished Sports Hall. Under the new bespoke lighting, teams from Royal Wotton Bassett Academy. Marling Cheltenham Ladies College and Wycliffe College, as well as 5 teams from KLB, battled it out over six rounds of outstanding badminton to be county champions in 4 age categories.
Our KS4 boys came up against stiff competition in a group won by Marling All 4 players put in some excellent performances but mention must go to Will McLusky who didn’t lose any of his singles games all day.
In the KS3 boys division, KLBs young (Y7 and 8) but talented team where beaten into silver place, again by Marling, but showed some real fight and maturity in their play. Once again their captain, Tom Eldridge, lead from the front, winning all of his singles games and the team put in a fine 5-0 win over their final opponents.
In the KS4 girls competition KLB entered A and B teams, giving both Y11 girls (who missed out on the School Games District round) and the Y10 team a shot at the medals. Matches were tough in this division, but after an especially well fought match between the two teams, the Y10 team ran out silver medallists behind Cheltenham Ladies College.
But revenge, and the best result of the day went to the KS3 girls team. Lead by Jenny Tofts, the girls dropped only a single game (and that by one point!) as they powered their way to grab the gold medals and progress on to the Region Finals.
Huge thanks to all who helped to put on this event, especially the KLB site team, Sharron Bates and Cath Chevin, and to all who came along to watch.
